Is it possible to add a variance filter to the custom channels in Smart Segementation?

I need to identify the interface between two parts of an imge. On one side of the image the texture is grainy and on the other it is smooth, but the over-all intensity is roughly the same. A variance filter seems to work quite well at picking out those differences, but I can't find it in the custom channels of the smart seg tool.

    Variance filter is not available as a custom channel for Smart segmentation. You can use other available edge filters: Edge Plus, Edge Minus, Gradient to extract the texture. You can define filter size to specifically extract the texture size you want.
