Grid and line analysis

I have photos with branching lines, I want to be able to overlay a square grid and count how many times the lines touch the grid in each square automatically.  I have been doing this manually, is there any way to automate this?  Any ideas?

    Hi Matt,

    You can try doing it with help of arithmetical operations. For example you can create a mask of grid rectangles (border only) and do arithmetical operation AND between the mask of branches and the mask of rectangles. Where the rectangle boundary crosses the branch, you will get bright spot, then you can calculate the number of bright spots in every rectangle.
